Last night was Drew's first Reconciliation. He was understandably nervous. I made him a note card to help him through the steps on one side, and the Act of Contrition on the other. He walked right up to Monsignor Mazur, sat in the chair and did his thing.
We could see that Monsignor had to help him a bit, but he did most of it himself. Drew knew his sins, but did not want to elaborate. So he likely said his sins were "stealing" (he often takes Gabe and Caroline's treats when they aren't looking), "lying" (he's recently discovered white-lies) and "not honoring his mother and father." We could see him talking a bit to Monsignor, and could tell he was told to be a better listener. he said his Act of Contrition, got his absolution and was on his way.
He came back to us all smiles and said that Monsignor told him he did a great job! His penance was to say one Our Father, which he did immediately and reverently. Then, as a family we went up to his CCD teacher, and Drew got to put his name on a banner that will be displayed all weekend. Rob lit his baptismal candle* and Drew got to put it in a display box with the candles of his classmates.
When we got back to our pew he looked at me, eyes all alit with joy and said "Mom, I want to do that (confession) again!" Only Drew! His little soul is all sparkly and shiny, and he's very ready to start preparing for his First Communion in April.
*We were lucky enough that his teacher had some extra candles. Drew doesn't have a Baptismal candle, as he was baptised in the hospital. Not to mention I forgot to swing by Lamb's Way to get one!
