It's a tradition at the ballpark, after weekend games the children are invited to run the bases. This is really a baseball staple, at least in the minors.
I am not a fan.
It's not the throngs of unsupervised children in various stages of sugar highs.
it's not the long line that wraps around the concourse.
It's the flippin' parents who push and shove their way through a line of children to try to gain some sort of (perceived) advantage for their kid.
I don't get it.
For the most part, we avoid it. At this stage of our baseball career, Drew is helping the grounds crew on the field after the game. Gabe will sometimes want to participate, but not often. Caroline doesn't care for all the pushing and shoving, and usually opts to skip it.
Last weekend we were there on a brisk evening. The crowd wasn't huge or overly obnoxious. My parents were in town to keep tabs on Gabe and Caroline. Drew was "working" on the field. Regina and I got in the very back of the line for her first chance to run the bases.
Regina loves to run....anywhere....at any time...ALWAYS. So this wasn't a stretch for her at all. When she noticed Daddy hanging out at second base, it was a very natural instinct to run to him.
"HI DADDY!!!!"
Being that we were the last ones in line, Daddy joined Regina for the last leg of her journey. They met Tenacious, and gave him a fist bump. (She avoided Steamer.......she's slightly afraid of Steamer. This breaks my heart.)
Success! They tagged third base. She loved every second of being on the field and running with Daddy. I guess we'll be doing it more often.
From the back of the line.
Away from all the pushing adults children.
